When I paint, I want to just get on with it and lay down my immediate response to the subject in colour: how it makes me feel, what the colours are doing. I want to paint things I love, that bring me joy, things that have a familiarity to me and anyone who might want to look at my work – flowers mainly at the moment, but also ceramics and views over the countryside. I’m always interested in people and faces, I love the painting class I sometimes go to where we paint a life model and the room they’re in within a short day: there’s so much energy in the room- the paintings can be incredible. I try and bring this energy to my studio practice – obviously there is less time-preassure so I try to hold in mind the memory of the class to keep things going.
